About us

Just before I launched Pagefield in August 2010, someone asked me a simple question: Why are you starting a new communications consultancy in an already crowded market and in the middle of the worst economic downturn in living memory?

It’s a good question and my answer was simple. During a corporate career spanning nearly two decades, I have commissioned a range of PR and lobbying agencies to help me deliver successful campaigns for some of the country’s biggest blue-chip companies. Whilst those agencies were consistently good at pitching, they were – with a few notable exceptions – very patchy at delivering on the promise of the pitch. The big agencies often made me feel as though my account was just part of a PR ‘factory’. And whilst the smaller, independent agencies were more enthusiastic and client-focused, they often lacked the breadth and depth of experience to deal with emerging crises for high profile clients.

What I wanted – and what all clients have the right to expect – was the best of all worlds. I wanted an agency with the experience, professionalism and intelligence of the really big London agencies, blended with the bespoke service, client-focus and energy of a truly independent consultancy. I wanted the flexibility of having a roster of best-in-class agencies without the hassle and expense of having to manage them all myself. I wanted the integrated service of a one-stop shop but I didn’t want to feel that my fees were paying for a range of services I wasn’t using. And I wanted to know that the team I was hiring were experts in their fields, that they had first-hand experience of handling agenda-setting campaigns, that they were the best people for my project and my business and frankly, that my opponents would wish that my team were on their side.

Bespoke. Integrated. Experienced. Pagefield is the consultancy I always wanted when I was a client. I hope we will be the consultancy you want now.

P.S. Many people have asked me about the provenance of the name Pagefield. Well, it was the name of the engineering company founded by my grandfather, James Churchouse, in the 1960s – which he in turn named after the colliery just outside Wigan where he first trained as an engineer in the 1940s. So it’s linked with a bit of history and some family entrepreneurialism.
