Landmark Assisted Dying Bill campaign recognised in double win at Pagefield Awards 2025

Wednesday 19th March

The wait is over! We’re delighted to announce the winners of the 2025 Pagefield Awards. Hosted by Jonathan Ashworth, Chief Executive of Labour Together, and judged by a distinguished panel of 16 leading journalists and experts, this year’s awards celebrated the individuals, teams, and organisations whose outstanding work has made a lasting impact on politics, media, and campaigning.

Among the evening’s highlights, Dignity in Dying and Kim Leadbeater MP took home prestigious awards in independent categories. Kim Leadbeater won the Political Speech of the Year award for her powerful words opening the debate on the Assisted Dying Bill in the House of Commons. Her speech, marked by compassion and dignity, helped to bring a deeply sensitive issue to the forefront of political debate.

Kim said: “We saw Parliament at its best because the tone, the compassion, and the understanding that was shown was something we can all be proud of. We don’t always see that in our politics. We don’t always see that in our journalism. So, when it does happen, we need to celebrate it.”

In a parallel achievement, Dignity in Dying won the Digital Campaign of the Year for its innovative and impactful digital strategies that helped raise awareness of the Assisted Dying Bill and engage the public in crucial conversations.

The awards also recognised long-term investigative efforts that have led to some of the biggest stories of the year. Cathy Newman, Channel 4 News presenter, was awarded Scoop of the Year for her eight-year investigation into John Smyth’s abuse and her exclusive interview with the Archbishop of Canterbury ahead of his resignation in 2024.

Meanwhile, Caroline Wheeler, Political Editor at the Sunday Times, was named Political Journalist of the Year for her decades-long commitment to uncovering the truth behind the Infected Blood Scandal, which ultimately resulted in a compensation scheme for victims announced in 2024.

For the second consecutive year, Health Secretary Wes Streeting MP won Frontbench MP of the Year for his continued success in one of the most challenging roles in government. In his video speech, filmed from his office at the Department of Health, Wes reflected on his personal journey, joking about his predecessor Matt Hancock and reaffirming his commitment to the NHS: “You may know it from a notorious piece of CCTV. But it is the honour of my life to be stood here in this office. The NHS saved my life when I went through kidney cancer. I can’t think of anything better than working to save our National Health Service.”

Sir Ed Davey MP was recognised as Political Campaigner of the Year for his bold and impactful tactics throughout the general election campaign.

Our Chief Executive, Oliver Foster, said: “The winners – and nominees – represent the very best of UK politics, media, and digital campaigning. It’s an honour to have the opportunity to recognise them at the Pagefield Awards. These individuals and organisations have held institutions to account, delivered justice for victims, changed hearts and minds, and illuminated stories that would have otherwise remained in the dark.”
