John’s career has mainly been spent in HM Government working on regulation, markets and business issues, with a strong EU and international dimension. His final role before leaving the Government in 2021 was Acting Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Trade (DIT). Prior to that he was the Director General for Trade Policy, DIT, responsible for building UK trade capability and developing trade policy post the EU referendum. Other Government positions held include CEO of the UK Intellectual Property Office, and Director General for Market Regulation (“Fair Markets”) in the Business Department. John is a Visiting Professor in Practice at LSE European Institute. He is also a trustee director of the Institute of Export and International Trade, which provides training and advice to help businesses to export, and a member of the Competition Appeal Tribunal, which hears appeals on the decisions of the competition and sectoral regulators.
